Birthday notifications can be configured to show on the day of the birthday or in advance (separate for all contacts vs favorite contacts).
You can pin a notification with the pin icon, to make it stick to the notifcation area until you unpin it (e.g. to constantly remind you to call or buy a present).
You can directly open the contact (if the birthday is stored in the contact) by pressing the contact image to the right.
